ABOUT The TRIBES of SOUTH AFRICA

The tribal history of the South Africa region is marked by two major periods. Originally, there were just two indigenous tribes of South Africa; the San & the Khoi-Khoi tribes, who have been in that region since well before recorded history.

The second period in the regions history "began" several centuries ago when the Bantu tribes of Northern Africa migrated to the South African region. These early Bantu tribes make up the contemporary tribes of South Africa including:
Lemba, Ndebele, Pedi, Pondo, Sotho, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Xhosa & the well known Zulu tribe.
Each of these tribes has their own unique design characteristics in their art, jewelery & handcrafts. Each item is one of a kind and it is really a treat to browse the listings of these important African artists.
