The countdown to the World Cup 2010 in Africa this June & July is coming down to the last few weeks before the biggest kick off on earth. If you are lucky, you will already have your tickets to watch some or all of the football matches of the 32 qualifying teams from all over the world. But not everyone can afford to go to SA to be part of the games in person. There will be football & soccer parties all over the planet for those 4 weeks and football fans are throwing themselves into the fan frenzy of jersey wearing, flag draping and face/body painting whether they have tickets or not. The announcement that the matches will be shown in 3D TV around the world have footies planning their soccer celebrations with the latest 3D big screen TVs and all their nations fan-o-bilia ready to wear.

So, just how to football fans gear up for the biggest match of the century?

We have all seen the video clips on TV and YouTube of the wildly expressive footies painted all over in their team colors, wearing matching wigs, capes, team scarves and often a full size 5 X 3 nations flag draped around them like a Superman cape or warrior's booty. An official team jersey is almost a must and these are available for every qualifying nation in all sizes, including kids jerseys and even baby onesies & bodysuits.
For waving around when your team scores, you really gotta have a team scarf of your team's official colors & badge. The whole stadium comes alive with a frenzy of vivid scarves gyrating rapidly everywhere, as far as the eye can see.
What a sight!
So how does a fan paint themselves up for a big match?
Once you have chosen your team, you need to find out the team colors. The list of team colors for each of the 2010 nations is just below. There are usually 2, 3 or 4 colors for each nation, an away color set and a home set as reflected by the home and away jerseys. One can assume that all the teams except South Africa will be wearing the away kit for all the games of the World Cup.
Fans use regular face paint to decorate their faces and often bodies with the team colors. The greasier the paint, the more it will run and mess up as the game goes on so It's better to stay away from grease paints used in theater. The watercolor face paints dry up quickly and stay in place for long periods of time, but they take a little more work to remove. For putting details like team flags or badges on your face or body, you will definitely need the watercolor face paints. You will be able to produce detailed images on your skin that will last all day & night. The easiest method to apply details like flags & badges to your face or body is to buy ready to use face stickers & temporary tattoos. These face stickers & tattos can be bought as flag images, nation logos, badges and team colors.
Check out your teams jerseys and the nation flag to find inspiration for your World Cup look. Most fans paint their whole face in the solid background color of the team jersey and then add stripes or markings in tribal or warrior style in places like cheeks, forehead and around eyes.
The latest craze for football fanatics is the fan wig that can be found in multi-colors to match your teams colors. The fan wigs are all readily available to buy online in every color combination.
Another growing trend is the fan helmet or head gear. These are usually one of a kind art pieces made by the fans themselves out of whatever materials are at hand and then painted in team colors & embellished with logos, souvenirs, pins and team badges. This has become a modern day art form with many fan helmets being created with flashing lights, glow in the dark, glitter and lazer light shows. There is one creative art entrepreneur in South Africa who is making these fan helmets to sell to fans for the 2010 Match. The name of this studio is Baloyi Makarapa.

The artwork that I've seen on some soccer fans is incredible and some smart photographer should make a photo art book on this topic.
So be unfettered in your creativity; no holds barred at a World Cup Match, especially this one held in the most creative continent on earth. There has never been a person who travelled to Africa who came away without a new sense of wonder because of the incredibly expressive creativity of the people they had seen & met there. So let 'er go footies.
Get your footie face on, drape that flag, pin that hat onto your multi-colored hair and just go nuts.
